A Singular Focus

Mission Statement: Heritage Christian University provides a biblically based education, promotes spiritual growth, and prepares communicators of the gospel.

For nearly 40 years, Heritage Christian University has been preparing men and women to become effective communicators of the gospel. HCU takes seriously the command of Christ to “go unto all the world” and realizes the importance of adequate training. No matter what your goal is…preaching, mission work, becoming an elder, counseling, teaching, or simply becoming a better Bible student… you can be confident that an education at HCU will take you where you need to go.

That’s because the university has a singular focus: equipping God’s people for greater service in His church. HCU Bible degree programs are academically challenging, practically oriented, and evangelistically focused. At Heritage, you will learn essential life skills in general education courses, but your emphasis will always be on real world ministry.

What is Real World Ministry? Exactly what it says. It’s learning to minister in the real world - taking care of the sick and poor, reaching out to widows and orphans, and saving the lost. It’s following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, and it is the foundation of Heritage Christian University.

If your desire is to serve and minister in more effective ways, HCU’s accredited Bible programs may be just what you’ve been looking for. No matter what your current situation may be, there is a program that’s right for you. Take a look at what HCU can offer you!

Heritage Christian University was organized as International Bible College in 1971 to increase the number of capable men and women with world vision and to prepare them for a life of Christian service. From its beginning, the university offered a four-year program of study emphasizing the biblical text and evangelism.

Heritage Christian University has a rich tradition within churches of Christ. The “evangelism workshop” concept sprung from the campus, at one point attracting crowds of nearly ten thousand to learn ministry and evangelism techniques. The World Evangelist, edited by Basil Overton, emanated from HCU until Brother Overton’s retirement.

The university also has a solid history of leadership. In fact, only two men have ever held the title of president. Charles Coil held the position from 1971 to 1989. Upon his retirement, Dennis Jones assumed the role and continues to serve as president today.

In 1988, HCU was accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education. The first video courses were added in 1990, making the university a pioneer within distance learning programs. In 2000, HCU added a graduate program and changed to its present name from International Bible College. The Distance Learning program went online in 2008.

For more information regarding the university’s history, contact HCU for a copy of As the Waters Cover the Sea, written by former vice president Vernon Shuffett.

Lifeblood of the University

An outstanding faculty is the lifeblood of every university. At Heritage Christian University, the focus has always been on real-world ministry, and the faculty is a perfect example of that unique blend of scholarship and practicality. While every Bible instructor is fully credentialed with degrees from institutions such as Brite Divinity School, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and Brandeis University, each instructor also has personal experience in local ministry, stateside campaigns, and foreign missions.

The current faculty includes full-time and associate ministers, elders, deacons, Bible class teachers, missionaries, counselors, and others involved in additional aspects of ministry. Every faculty member shares your love for souls and your personal commitment to real-world ministry. Their desire is to aid in the preparing of effective communicators of the gospel, and they understand the enormity of the task.

HCU instructors know the name of each of their students, and challenge them to excel. They have a genuine concern for the well-being of both the students and the church. They welcome one-on-one time with students, helping to make sure that each student becomes the best that he or she can be.
